Local ties to Hobey
2 04 2008College hockey gets a distant second billing to the Sabres around here, but there’s plenty worth noting about the Hobey Baker finalists that were announced today. Nathan Gerbe, Kevin Porter and Ryan Jones were the three finalists.
• Boston College’s Gerbe, the second coming of Derek Roy, was a Sabres draft choice who has led the Eagles to this weekend’s Frozen Four by scoring 30 goals and adding 30 assists in 60 games.
You’ve probably seen his incredible penalty shot goal, but if not, it’s posted below.
• Porter torched Niagara for four goals in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Ask NU coach Dave Burkholder if he thinks Porter is worthy of the award.
• Jones, meanwhile, has a great mullet. That’s the only local tie I could come up with. We love mullets. Check it out.
Here’s Gerbe’s goal:
